SHIRLEY — Baseball- and soccer-field upgrades are on the Shirley Youth Athletic Booster Club’s agenda, said the club President Susan Snyder, who has announced plans for a road-race fund-raiser.

The first annual Shirley Spring Sprint will take place May 6. It will feature a 5K run, two-mile walk and one-mile kids’ fun run, said Snyder.

The club holds fund-raisers throughout the year to support student athletic programs. The club purchases sports uniforms, some athletic equipment and helps pay for warm-up suits for the school’s sports teams, Snyder said during the School Committee’s Jan. 10 meeting.

But ice-cream socials and spaghetti dinners, while successful, aren’t enough to support the club’s plans for outdoor field upgrades, she said.

“We don’t make that kind of money,” said Snyder, who came before the committee because the club wants to hold the race in cooperation with the school district and use the Shirley Middle School grounds as a hub for activities.

“I’m not asking you to do anything,” she said, unless any committee members want to participate in the race.

Other organizations, like the United Way Youth Venture program, Shirley Educational Foundation and ShirleyArts! are welcome to set up activities or booths for the event, she said.

Giving their informal nod of approval, members Robert Prescott Jr. and Robert Schuler lightheartedly discussed whether they will sign up for the race.

For information or to register visit or Participants can also register on the day of the race.
