As the interim superintendent for the Shirley School District, I am happy to welcome you to the 2006-2007 school year. A lot of exciting and positive events have taken place this summer, which I believe will enhance the many terrific learning opportunities for our students.

We are very happy to have Suzanne Mahoney returning as the principal of the Lura A. White Elementary School. I have come to respect and appreciate her great interest in LAW students and the many qualities she brings to the position.

We are also very happy to have Ruthann Goguen as our Shirley Middle School principal. Ruthann comes to us with a varied background in teaching, counseling and administration. Although officially beginning in mid-August, she has been working with staff at the SMS and will be prepared with the staff to begin the school year.

There are two other members of the administrative team. One is Patty Stern, who has been the business manager for the district for a number of years and does a terrific job being responsible for the budget and many other duties. I am also pleased to be able to introduce Teresa “Teri” Babetski, who has just been hired to be our director of special education/early childhood and grants coordinator. Teri’s personality, background and experience will be an asset to our system.

Another exciting addition to our district is the inclusion of a full-time guidance counselor for the middle school. This will allow Jackie Quesnel to concentrate on her position as the guidance counselor for kindergarten through grade four.

I have met some very enthusiastic and passionate staff members who clearly have the best interests of students at heart. I have also been able to meet a number of parents and people from the community who have welcomed me and helped me begin to know about the school district and community. The School Committee has been very supportive toward the needs of the schools, and I will be working closely with them to help make the schools meet the expectations of the community.

I am looking forward to meeting the entire staff on Monday, Aug. 28, and seeing our students beginning on Tuesday, Aug. 29. I also look forward to meeting more members of the community as we communicate about the terrific things that are taking place in our schools and we work together to address the issues that remain ahead.

Thank you to all who have welcomed me to the school district and your community.

MALCOLM “MAC” P. REID

Interim Superintendent

Shirley
