Greetings from Lura A. White Elementary School! The classrooms are ready, the hallways are gleaming, and the teachers are anxious to begin a new year. Everyone has been working hard to prepare for the new school year, and we look forward to opening day on Tuesday, Aug. 29.
On Monday, Aug. 28, families are invited to attend our “Welcome Back to School” open house from 11 a.m. to noon, visit classrooms and meet teachers. The open house is designed to heighten anticipation for the start of school, calm back-to-school jitters and promote a smooth first day. We hope you’ll stop by.
I am pleased to announce the following appointments to our staff. Kristen Lynch, Lura White’s reading specialist, will move to grade three, and Tammy Sonntag will teach kindergarten. In special education, Cathy Rimkus is the grade one and two inclusion specialist, Amanda Simmons will teach the self-contained special education class, Emily Babineau will join us as a speech assistant, and Rebecca Djordievic and Kristy Leaman will work in the classrooms as teacher assistants. Francis Prunier, a Lura White alum, is our new custodian. We welcome them all!
The supply lists went home in June. If you have any questions about school supplies, call Kathy Banks in the main office at (978) 425-2630, ext. 422. Teachers will post the classroom schedules for art, music, physical education and library time in their parent newsletters.
The school doors open at 8:40 a.m. Children who arrive for breakfast may head directly to the cafeteria at 8:30 a.m. At 8:45 a.m. classroom teachers promptly take attendance and lunch count and begin the day’s instruction. It is critical that your child arrives to school on time. Unsupervised students who are dropped off early will be directed to the extended-day program to ensure their safety.
Dismissal is at 3 p.m. Parents who wish to pick up their children at the end of the school day should report to the small gym at 3 p.m. to meet and sign out their children. You should enter the gym through the side doors facing the playground.
The 2006-2007 Student-Parent Handbook will be sent home during the first week of school. Review it with your child and return the sign-off sheet to your child’s teacher.
The Lura White staff is caring, competent and dedicated. We will work hard everyday to provide the very best education for your child. As always, we welcome your support and encourage your involvement. A strong parent-home connection is critical to your child’s success.
Wishing you and your family a happy and successful school year!
