It is my pleasure to introduce myself, Ruthann Goguen, as the new principal of the Shirley Middle School. Although I have only been aboard for a short time, I have been greeted by many welcoming phone calls, e-mails and personal visits. I appreciate that and would also like to extend a sincere thank you to Mr. Tom Casey, for he is working with me on a smooth transition of leadership for the Shirley Middle School.

I am excited to work with the teachers, staff, students, parents and community in determining future educational goals that will enable the Shirley Middle School to continue to grow. I look forward to meeting the entire Shirley Middle School family and members of the community in the next few weeks. I will be hosting several coffee hours for parents once school has started.

Things are very busy for us as we prepare for the beginning of a new school year. We are working diligently on scheduling for the students and hope to have them sent home prior to the beginning of the school year. We are also working on updating the Web site so the supply lists for each grade level can be posted.

I would also like to inform students and parents about the Advisory Group that will be initiated this year for all students. This will be a 15-minute block of time in the beginning of each day where a small group of students will begin its day with a teacher. This time is designed to build community, communication and small group dialogue.

Students, we hope you are all getting excited and prepared with your supplies and sleep. The first day of school is Aug. 29. School hours are 7:50 a.m. to 2:10 p.m. We will begin the first day of school in the beautiful auditorium with our first school wide assembly of the year. The new teachers will be introduced and students will be separated by grade level and homeroom teacher to help ease the first day jitters and make our first day back more enjoyable!

There has been an increase to our full-price student lunch this year as well. The new cost for the full-priced student lunch will be $2. As always, prepaid lunch tickets are available through the Food Service Department for your convenience.

I look forward to many years of working together on educating our students in Shirley!
