Groton Area Newcomers and Friends announces 2006-07 events

GROTON — Whether you are new to the area or have lived here for many years, Groton Area Newcomers and Friends is an organization that brings people together and offers a sense of community.

Activities for the 2006-07 membership year will include a book club, telecommuters’ lunch, new moms, moms & tots, skiing, a couples club, family activities, ladies’ night out, Bunco and a craft club. The group is also planning many special events such as a booth for selling caramel apples at Grotonfest, a Presidents’ Picnic, a wine and beer party, and a children’s Halloween party.

In addition to planning social and recreational activities, the group devotes a significant amount of time and energy to community service. The annual Senior Citizens’ Holiday Dinner is a major event. The club also donates to Loaves & Fishes. Members also raise money for an annual scholarship, which is awarded to a high school senior with a strong background in community service.

Membership is $25 — $30 after Sept. 30 — for the year, which begins in September and runs through June. In addition to the activities, members receive benefits that include baby-sitting referrals, homemade meals during times of need, discounts at the Groton Country Club and some local stores, and a monthly newsletter with details on all of the activities.
