GROTON — The Groton Trails Committee presented Paul Funch with its Exceptional Volunteer Award in 2005, the only such award made by the committee in its seven-year history. The committee builds, maintains, marks and maps trails on public lands in town. It also publicizes opportunities for residents to make use of the town’s spacious and beautiful conservation lands.

The committee recognized Funch for great commitment. He has given tirelessly to the town through this organization for many years. He was one of 15 charter members appointed to the committee when the selectmen established it in 1998. Four such members are still serving on the committee.

Funch served as chairman for three years, from 2002 to 2005. These years were characterized by a highly-ambitious agenda under Paul’s leadership where many projects were taken on and completed. Paul also initiated and has managed the Town Forest Trail Races for eight years and has raised awareness and appreciation for the magnificent scenery and trails in West Groton. The races have also provided a donor source of funds for the upkeep and signing of trails over the years.

Funch was given an engraved plaque commemorating his service and standout impact on the committee’s accomplishments.
