Dear editor:

On behalf of the Groton-Dunstable Middle School Wellness teachers, I would like to express our appreciation for the Groton Police Department’s implementation of the DARE curriculum in grade five during the 2005-2006 year. Sgt. Cathi Welch once again taught the curriculum to all grade five students during their Wellness classes over the course of the year. Sgt. Cathi, as our students know her, approaches the curriculum with enthusiasm and energy, providing valuable information to our community’s children. The children learn about and discuss the importance of making healthy decisions, particularly with regard to alcohol, other drug use and violence, and the impact of their decisions on their lives, their families and their friends. These messages are consistently reinforced in Wellness classes throughout middle school.

The Groton Police Department funded this program in full — an indication of the positive partnership between the school district, families and the police. This level of collaboration is an essential ingredient for all good prevention work and we thank Chief Robert Mulhern and the department for their support.

Sincerely,

DR. JUDY ROBINSON

GDRSD Health Coordinator
