TOWNSEND — The North Middlesex Regional School Committee elected veteran member Theresa Morse to serve as chairman for the upcoming year. She replaces Joseph Sciacca, who has served as chairman for the past year. Morse represents Townsend on the board.

Member Anne Buchholz, representative from Pepperell, was elected to serve as vice chairman, while Dennis Moore was unanimously elected to continue as the committee secretary.

Morse received five of the nine committee votes to serve as chair, beating out committee member Frederick Wheeler for the position. Morse received votes from Sciacca, Moore, Susan Fitzgerald, new member Kathryn Low and herself.

Wheeler’s votes came from members Buchholz, Lisa Marie Proctor, Arnie Silva and himself.

Morse said the upcoming year will be a critical one with all the personnel changes occuring.

”We have people leaving the school system that will be replaced,” Morse said.

The School Committee recently hired Dr. Maureen Marshall to be the new Superintendent of Schools, replacing James McCormick.

”We are loosing Dr. Mary Waight and Mr. James O’Shea, principal of the high school. It will be up to Dr. Marshall to replace them, but we as the school committee have to provide her with the tools to make the decisions,” Morse said.

Morse will be serving her second term as chairperson, and looks forward to smooth transitions with staff.

”We all want things to go smoothly with all the changes coming up, so it will be an interesting year ahead,” she concluded.
