GROTON — The School Committee has heard from Prescott Elementary School principal Betty Lavin and Swallow Union Elementary School principal Peter Myerson on how they have met their goals for the year and plans for improving their operations.
Outlining her goals on May 3, Lavin listed the enhancement of students’ mathematical skills, concentration on “physical, social, mental and emotional health” issues in order to develop “the whole student,” continued work on improving her school’s physical plant, and to create a “technology rich environment” for students.
Other objectives include the introduction of at least one new science or social studies class for grades K-4 and to bolster spelling and reading skills among students.
For his part, Myerson said that during the first year of his school improvement plan, the goal among his students would be to learn better through a combination of strengthened instructional practices and the study of data gathered on student performance. Also for the first year, efforts would be made to inspire a love of reading among students through the creation of new programs and taking advantage of any opportunity to promote literacy skills.
For the second year of Myerson’s improvement plan, efforts would be made to improve communication between the school’s administrators and student population and the general public by developing programs, pursuing opportunities, and opening communication links.
Like Prescott, another of Swallow Union’s goals will be to improve math skills among its students. – Pierre Comtois
