SHIRLEY — The Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library has scheduled its next meeting for Tuesday, April 18, at 6:30 p.m., at the library.
Patrons interested in running for office for our upcoming season — September 2006 to May 2007 — are welcome to attend and see what our organization is all about. Nominations will be accepted until May 2. Offices include secretary, treasurer, vice president and president. We are also looking for three people to become directors of the Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library.
Becoming an officer or a director is a very fulfilling and worthwhile endeavor. It is a wonderful way to get involved with your community and meet new people. Voting will take place at our annual meeting on May 16.
The Friends of the Hazen Memorial Library is a nonprofit corporation with two missions. One is to support the local library by promoting it through sponsoring fun events. Some Friends-sponsored events this year included the Holiday Tea which featured the captivating storyteller, Mark Binder; the Halloween Festival and Haunted House; and the Eyes on Owls program. The friends also sponsor Wiggles and Giggles on Wednesdays, a widely popular preschool musical story time program.
The other mission of the Friends is to raise money for the library for needed items that aren’t within the scope of its budget. The recently held Antiques Appraisal Day, with nationally-known expert Paul Royka, is one example of how the friends raise money. The money has been used to purchase a display rack for children’s music, security cases for DVDs, summer reading prizes, summer reading performers and new chairs for the Children’s Room. Over $4,000 is used for museum passes in the course of a year alone, so you can see that fund-raising is a big part of what we do.
