Dear Editor:

On behalf of the Steering Committee of the Groton-Dunstable Alliance for Youth, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of GDAY’s Respect Committee in bringing the Rainbow Players to the Groton-Dunstable Middle School on March 22. In particular, we would like to thank committee member Donnie Funch for her time and energy. Writing a grant proposal, securing the performance and coordinating the event with the GDRSD Fine Arts Department was no small task.

The Rainbow Players are an inclusive theater troupe from Amherst, Mass., composed of individuals with a variety of disabilities. The troupe uses improvisation to touch upon issues around discrimination, bullying and self-esteem. We were fortunate to have the troupe visit the school for the entire day — conducting workshops with drama classes, visiting the Life Skills classes, and presenting a school-wide performance. The program provided a wonderful opportunity for disabled students and general education students alike, providing the general education students an understanding of students with disabilities and the similarities among students with and without disabilities.

GDAY would also like to acknowledge the funding support of the Groton-Dunstable Education Foundation. Without their support, it would not have been possible for GDAY to bring this wonderful program to our school community.

Sincerely,

JUDY ROBINSON, GDAY Coordinator

CELIA SILINONTE, Chair, GDAY Respect Committee
