”Perseverance is the most overrated of traits, if it is unaccompanied by talent; beating your head against a wall is more likely to produce a concussion in the head than a hole in the wall.” — Sydney Harris

A hush fell over the crowd at the selectmen’s meeting as Frank Belitsky (there may be snow on the roof, but there is still fire in the furnace), introduced the members of the Groton Community Foundation.

The Groton Country Club and Recreational Authority may become a community center.

At the time the Country Club was bought, the townspeople were told that the bond would be paid in a few years and after that the operation would be a “cash cow” for the town.

That dream has never happened.

The town may call a town meeting and choose to confirm or not confirm the Country Club Authority.

Recreation Department

At the same selectmen’s meeting, the Groton Recreation Department was informed that the department would not be funded in FY07. The reason is that no one in town would step to the plate and become a recreation commissioner. Are we approaching the autumn of volunteerism?

We the people of Groton enjoyed a wonderful year in 2005. Our 350th. The magic results were because a dedicated group of people made it happen. It is unfortunate that there isn’t a similar group to help the Recreation Department.

Solving oil crisis

I did notice that President Bush took a liking to my plan to solve the oil problem, that is to say, develop a different source of energy than oil.

I do remember in the ‘30s when the Japanese were buying scrap iron from the U.S. No one ever thought we would get it back on Dec. 7.
