The town of Shirley depends on its generous volunteers. Many organizations in Shirley would not survive and grow without a variety of volunteers.

On behalf of the Shirley Historical Society, I want to publicly thank four volunteers. Over Christmas school vacation week, the Shirley Historical Society computer systems were dramatically upgraded thanks to these volunteers.

Tim Kelley has not lived in Shirley very long, but he is already finding where he can help out. Tim works at Harvard University where they upgrade their computers on a regular schedule. One of their old computers was so much more advanced than the computers in use at the Historical Society Museum, that Tim arranged for the University to donate it to us. Then Tim and volunteer Paul Wade installed appropriate software and got the computer up and running.

Meanwhile, Ward Baxter and Paul were getting the museum switched over to Verizon DSL. Now people can phone the Museum Saturday mornings between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and still get through, even if someone is working on-line.

Meanwhile, volunteer Bob Burkhardt was switching the Historical Society Web site to a new domain name: www.shirleyhistory.org and a new e-mail address: mail@shirleyhistory.org. Bob also helps maintain the society Web site, which is full of information about the society, town history and current happenings.

Of course, the Historical Society could still benefit from other people volunteering to clean, copy, file, work on displays or enter information into the new database, but for now, I just want to say thank you to these four capable volunteers.
