AYER — A story recounting police Chief Richard Rizzo’s complaints against Selectman Frank Maxant in the Jan. 6 issue of the Public Spirit contained an error of omission.

In our report, Maxant was queried about why he made inquiries to the Police Department, and whether he trusted Rizzo to conduct an investigation.

Maxant’s response was that town employees who under-perform can either improve, not improve or leave, and his questions were intended to facilitate improvement.

The story should have read “Maxant responded to such charges” instead of “Maxant responded.”

Since that omission was juxtaposed with the comment about Maxant trusting the chief, it implies he was speaking directly about Rizzo at that point, which was not the intent.

Instead, Maxant referred to his questions being about the department as a whole, not any individual officer.
