Sixpoint's Autumnation is a strange beast -- a hybrid of a pumpkin beer and a spiced pale ale. This year's version was the result of a fan poll regarding which hop varietal it would feature. The chosen hop was Citra, a fruity, citric hop with mainly tropical flavors.

Pouring a seasonal orange with medium clarity and a foamy, rocky, off-white head that leaves behind extremely tight lacing, Autumnation is certainly a great looking beer. Though it claims to be a pumpkin beer, this particular brew drinks more like a spiced pale ale with its pumpkin as an afterthought. Orange and grapefruit notes are extremely apparent as the beer warms.

I think this might be hard to find at this point as it was a fairly-limited release and Sixpoint has unfortunately fallen victim to Hurricane Sandy recently... kudos/good luck to them and good hunting to you if you attempt to seek out this brew. Cheers!

The official breakdown:

  • Style: Pumpkin Ale
  • ABV: 6.7%
  • Appearance: A nice amber-leaning orange with bright highlights. Head is decent and mildly-foamy, and lacing is pretty spectacular
  • Scent: Pumpkin seeds, vegetal qualities, tangerine, melon, light pine, crackery/biscuit-y malt; bright and interesting
  • Taste: Medium-roasted malt with some deeper, squash-like aspects backing it up; yams in the middle, tropical fruit and spicy, dry ginger in the finish.
  • Mouthfeel: Very flavorful, extremely complex and busy... full-bodied but refreshing
  • Drinkability: I think this is a one-per-session beer but only because it's so weird.
