WESTMINSTER -- A driver landed in the hospital Sunday night after his vehicle careened off an embankment on Narrows Road and into a small river just before 8:30 p.m., according to police.
Robert Pentland, 60, of Jewett Street, Pepperell, was traveling north on Narrows Road when his vehicle drove off the left side of the roadway at a curve just after the Notown Road intersection, police said.
The car struck a support wire for a telephone pole and plunged down a steep embankment into a small river. The vehicle came to a rest in the river bed, police said.
Pentland was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster. He was alone at the time of the crash.
Police did not know the nature of Pentland's injuries. Pentland's vehicle sustained damage to its front, rear and undercarriage.
