TOWNSEND -- Two candidates are vying for the Board of Selectmen seat that Chairman Gordon Clark will vacate in April.

John Hussey and Wayne Miller returned nomination papers with enough certified signatures to appear on the spring election ballot. The town election will take place April 23.

Hussey is a member of the Conservation Commission and owner of D.J. Hussey Christmas tree farm.

Miller, a microbiologist at the pharmaceutical and lab equipment supply company Sartorius, previously indicated that he will run for Clark's seat as part of the ongoing recall effort against Clark and Selectman Cindy King.

State judges blocked the recall election, which was set for June 2017.

Recall supporters appealed the ruling in November. The state Appeals Court reversed the recall injunction at the beginning of March, setting the recall back in motion.

Since Clark is already leaving office, a recall could be set for King, whose term is up in 2019.

Clark has been a member of the Board of Selectmen since 2015.
