TOWNSEND -- Now that a firm dollar figure has been affixed to an offer from an anonymous source to pay for expanded library hours, selectmen this week accepted the $9,500 gift and approved the idea.

"Whoever you are out there, thank you," chairman David Chenelle said.

Two weeks ago, library Director Heidi Fowler and trustees brought the board word of donation of an unspecified amount to pay for staffing the new library for four hours on Sundays for the months of January to mid April.

Noting that it's another win-win scenario, Chenelle and Selectman Robert Plamondon gave their preliminary approval to the idea and establishment of a donation account for the town opted to wait until the actual amount was known. At the time, Fowler had no firm figure other than an idea of how much the donor would be willing to spend.

Fowler told the board that most library workers are receptive to working the additional hours. Six employees would take turns with the shift. The donation, she said, will be a lump sum, not a weekly or monthly payment.
