BOXBORO -- One of the 12 candidates vying for the 3rd Congressional District seat is dropping out of the race.

Patrick Littlefield, formerly of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, cited fundraising in an announcement email to supporters Thursday morning. His team has not kept pace with the leading candidates.

"With only 13 weeks until the September 4th primary, and without the resources we need to get our message out to the voters, I no longer see a viable path to victory," he wrote to friends and supporters. "Therefore, with a heavy heart, I have decided to withdraw from the race."

Ten names remain on the Democratic ballot. One Republican is running.

In his announcement Thursday morning, Littlefield also mentioned the importance of improving opportunities for everyday Americans. Those issues include stagnant wages, rising costs for health care and education, and the increasing concentration of wealth at the top.

"These trends worry me greatly," he wrote.

However, Littlefield said he's optimistic about the future.

"With an engaged and energized public, I am convinced that we are in the midst of a cycle of civic renewal," he wrote.
