GROTON - Algonquin struck first. But host Groton-Dunstable responded in a major way en route to a convincing 35-14 football victory.
Tristan Lynch carried 13 times for 134 yards, Joey Orlando gained 60 yards on eight carries and quarterback Corey Romich (3-for-5 through the air for 100 yards) carried five times for 35 yards.
Joey Stewart caught two passes for 90 yards. Defensive standouts included Orlando, Drew Moore and Quentin Forbes.
Algonquin took a 6-0 lead with 6:04 left in the first quarter when Tim Neville threw a 20-yard pass to Jim Egan and the kick made it 7-0.
G-D got on the board with 17 seconds left in the quarter when Romich rushed 5 yards for the score and Eric Yanchenko made the kick to make it 7-7.
Algonquin took its second lead when Kyle Hill caught a screen pass and sprinted 35 yards to paydirt and a kick by Ben Jachowicz was again good for the visitors.
But then it was all G-D.
Later in the second quarter, Lynch and Orlando broke off long runs, and Orlando scored on a 10-yard run and the kick by Yanchenko made it 14-14.
G-D later got the ball back on its own 20. Romich found Stewart wide open and Stewart took the ball down to the goal line, carrying several defenders on his back. Lynch then punched in a 1-yard TD.
In the third quarter, Lynch ripped off a 42-yard run and Orlando scored from 3 yards out and the Yanchenko kick made it 28-14.
