GROTON -- The Groton-Dunstable girls' cross country team defeated Marlborough, 21-38, on its 3.1-mile course, located behind the school. Groton-Dunstable sophomore Emily McAuliffe secured the top position, finishing the course with a time of 22:26.

"Emily is a sophomore and is our lead runner," Groton-Dunstable head coach Colleen Naboicheck said. "She was a league All-Star last year and ran at the all-state meet. She is expected to lead our team this year."

Marlboro's Jillian Ciaizzi was not far behind McAuliffe with her time of 22:40. Groton-Dunstable saw seven of its harriers finish in the top 10.

Among the top finishers was Lady Crusaders' senior captain Angelica Vasquez-Diaz with her fourth-place finish at 24:13. Next, in seventh place, was Alyssa Gerner (25:38), followed by Annie Gold with a finish of 26:03.

"She is the only senior on the team," Naboicheck said. "She placed fourth overall today. She ran all summer and has already improved from last year."

Groton-Dunstable takes to the road for its next three meets. The Lady Crusaders do not return home until Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they take on Quabbin at 4 p.m.
