HARVARD -- Coming into the season, head coach Hilary Kuss was excited about the amount of youth her team possesses and was interested in how they would mesh with the veterans.

Bromfield senior captain Kiley Nigren poured in four goals, but it wasn't enough, as the Lady Trojans fell to Oakmont 13-9.

Senior goaltender Hannah Basnett stymied eight shots in goal for the Lady Trojans. Kuss felt that Thursday afternoon's home opener was a solid learning experience for her team.

Bromfield outshot the Lady Spartans 23-21.

"Kylie had a great game, and we are going to rely a lot on our experienced players," said Kuss. "Oakmont graduated a couple good girls last season. We were trying to get our defense settled, and they had a good girl on their team in (Shayla Beatty), that was better than some of the others. I thought we did a nice job defending her.

Bromfield got on the score sheet first two minutes into the match with a nice shot by Nigren off a crisp feed in front of the cage from classmate Jackie Planchet to make it 1-0.

Nigren dashed in towards the left side of the net and tucked it top-shelf. Oakmont answered right back less than a minute later with a sniper shot from behind the goal by Beatty.

Beatty secured an offering from Brea Loomis to knot the game up at 1-1. Beatty cut across the mouth of the goal and received a swift pass from Courtney Nivala at the 6:00 mark to give the Lady Spartans a 2-1 advantage.

Nivala continued to keep the Lady Trojans defense on their heels, as she rippled the mesh midway through the half from 10 yards out to extend the Lady Spartans' lead to 3-1.

Beatty buried another, this time from Jayme Morin at 15:09 to make it 4-1.

Bromfield weathered three unanswered goals by Oakmont and retaliated with one of their one. Planchet secured a bullet pass from Lexi Dutkewych, stick-faked to her left and skipped the ball into the cage to cut the Lady Spartans lead to 4-2 17:00 in.

Loomis would tack on another goal for the Lady Spartans two minutes later when she nestled the ball top-shelf out of the Bromfield timeout.

Planchet brought Bromfield back within two, as she coaxed the ball inside the far post off a nifty feed from Nigren to make it 5-3 with less than 5:00 left in the half.

Planchet netted another a minute later with a beautiful skip shot from the right side to bring the Lady Trojans back within a goal as they trailed 5-4.

Oakmont would outscore Bromfield in the final two minutes of the half with two more tallies from Sarah Morse and a tomahawk shot from Nivala.

Dutkewych rung the ball off the helmet of Oakmont goalie Karlene Cudak and it deflected in the net in the latter part of the first half to trim the Lady Spartans' lead at halftime to 7-5.

The Lady Trojans regrouped at the half and wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Nigren recorded her third goal of the afternoon on a slicing pass from Cara Olejarz 20 seconds in. Nigren took the ball and screamed it past Cudak to bring Bromfield within one at 7-6.

Nigren skipped another one over the goalline on a Planchet offering to cut Oakmont's lead to 8-7. The Lady Spartans outscored Bromfield 6-3 in the second half. Bromfield netted goals from Nigren and Dutkewych in the final minutes, but it was a late one by Beatty that put the Lady Trojans' comeback hopes to rest.

Bromfield senior Lily Alfano secured a game-high five ground balls in the loss.

"It is a really good starting place for us," said Kuss on the Lady Trojans' opening-day loss. "We had six people out there who have never played lacrosse before. I am pleased with the result though."
