Algonquin: 15 Groton-Dunstable:7
Algonquin is a perennial Central Mass. powerhouse (2012 central mass champs). GD started four freshman and one sophomore at times they had five freshman and two sophomores on the field.
Once the young team settled down, GD played Algonquin even in the second half.
Freshman Maria Antonellis anchored the Lady Crusaders in goal with 11 saves. The defense stood their ground, as they were led by seniors Caroline Stark and Vanessa Song, but the Lady Crusaders were beat in transition at the midfield by a more experienced Algonquin team.
Sophomore Nicki Wilkinson led Groton-Dunstable with three goals while senior captain Lauren Kraemer, and junior Livie Rubeski pitched in two.
" Algonquin is likely the stongest opponent we will face this year," said head coach Gary Kraemer. "I am very pleased with the play in this first game of the season, only our third day outside of a gym. I am looking forward to the coming games as our young team gets more games under their belt. We're going to get our share of wins this year."
