SHIRLEY -- Anonymous Snapchat messages have Shirley police stepping up patrols at Lura White Elementary School and Ayer Shirley Middle School until Friday.

Ayer Shirley Superintendent Mary Malone said there is no credible or specific threat to student safety from the messages, which allegedly came from someone in Fitchburg.

"We are doing our due diligence," said Shirley Police Chief Samuel Santiago. "We would rather take caution with an increased presence than do nothing."

Fitchburg Schools responded Monday to a report of an anonymous threat posted on Snapchat.

Lt. Alfreda Cromwell, who also serves as a school resource officer in Shirley, said some middle school-aged students in the district may have received or viewed related Snapchat messages from Fitchburg.

She said the department is looking into messages that could have stemmed from the that incident.

Malone informed parents earlier in the week that police would be around the two schools.
