SHIRLEY -- Two residents have thrown their hats into the ring to become a selectman.

As of Sept. 5, Debbie Flagg and Bryan Sawyer submitted nomination papers for the special town election on Nov. 7. The collected signatures have not yet been certified, according to Town Clerk Bill Oelfke.

Flagg is a retired math teacher from the Ayer Shirley Regional School District and still works as a math coach. Sawyer has been the general manager of the Bull Run Restaurant since 2009.

The seat was vacated when Jim Wilson, who was reelected in the spring, resigned. The new selectman will finish that term, which expires in 2020.

The last day to pick up and return nominations to the town clerk is Sept. 19.
