PEPPERELL — Brian Borneman could start making a longer commute to work soon as the new town fire chief.
The Board of Selectmen decided to offer Borneman the position during last Wednesday's meeting to take over for Toby Tyler.
The board originally had 17 candidates to narrow down and Borneman is currently discussing the terms of his contract with Town Administrator Andrew MacLean.
Last Thursday, MacLean said that the town is looking to offer Borneman a three-year contract and once that is finalized, there will be an official appointment.
Borneman is a Townsend man born-and-raised, eventually graduating from North Middlesex Regional High School in 1988 and then becoming a damage controlman for the U.S. Navy.
After being discharged from the Navy, Borneman became a call firefighter for the Townsend Fire Department in 1991. He worked for the department on and off during the ensuing years, serving as a firefighter, lieutenant and deputy chief at different times. He was even Townsend's acting fire chief for nearly a year in 2005. He also worked for the fire department in Merrimack, New Hampshire for 24 years, first as a firefighter and eventually retiring as Assistant Chief of Support Services. Since September 2018, Borneman has been working as a Risk & Emergency Manager for Fitchburg State University.
"I have always thought of Pepperell as a place I would love to serve as Fire Chief," Borneman said on Tuesday. "The firefighters have always had a good reputation and over the years and I have worked along side several of the current members at different fires in surrounding towns. I had given significant thought to applying two years ago when the position was open however decided to stay in Merrimack a couple more years."
Borneman said he's looking to bring his varied experience to the town along with a "fresh perspective."
He added how he's looking forward to collaborating with other members of the department in developing "a long-term strategic plan" that addresses the needs of the community.
