PEPPERELL -- New lights are on outside of Town Hall, the final installation of the town's grant award to upgrade its overall energy efficiency. The $222,000 grant from the state Department of Energy Resources is the latest payout to help cities and town's weatherize against waste.

The Mass Green Communities Program has rewarded 240 cities and towns, that present plans to lower energy consumption. Pepperell's funds, released in July, are earmarked for nine small projects over eight town buildings. The lion's share of the money, $86,173, went toward interior and exterior, energy-efficient lighting at Varnum Brook Elementary School and $50,000 for new lighting, inside and out, at the town hall.

This is the third consecutive year that Pepperell has procured the generous grant and joins only Ayer as recipients in the area.

Weatherization products were applied at six municipal buildings, including $60,000 worth at the Senior Center. The Green Communities Division of DOER awards the grants to towns that present a clear plan that includes specific aims for the money.
