PEPPERELL -- Former Selectman Stephen Themelis and retired police sergeant Bill Greathead are facing off for a seat on the Board of Selectmen.

Themelis served six years on the board and has worked in town government. Greathead retired in November after 30 years with the Pepperell Police Department.

Chair Melissa Tzanoudakis will not seek re-election. Voters will decide which candidate will take her spot on the board at town election on April 23.

Themelis wants to build on the work he has done for the town. He served as a selectmen from 2011 to 2017, including several years as chairman. During that time, he said he helped strengthen the town's fiscal ability and helped Pepperell become a Green Community and gain access to state grants for energy efficient initiatives.

Through his leadership and experience, "I want to help move Pepperell into the 21st century and prosper," he said.

Themelis wants to help attract new business and families to the area.

He also wants to support the town's departments and address the needs of residents. For example, the Fire Department could use more on staff and support for its EMT program to be able to help during emergencies.

Themelis moved to town in the 1960s and raised his family in Pepperell.

Through his experience in law enforcement, Greathead said he has the skills to serve on the board. He gets along well with others, listens, and can bring people together to work out their issues.

"I'm not a politician," Greathead said.

"I'm a fixer."

One of his main focuses is public safety. The Fire Department needs more staff members and new equipment. Money spent to fix the roof of an old, mold-infested building of the Police Department could be put toward a new public-safety complex, he said.

Greathead, who has lived in Pepperell for about 30 years, said he wants to preserve a small-town image.

He doesn't like the idea of more traffic, big business, and retail coming in. There has been positive development over the years, Greathead said, but he wants to make sure that the town can still be the place where people want raise their families and local businesses thrive.

He said he plans to serve one term.
