Lawrence Library supports cooking from scratch! We have lots of books about cooking and preserving your own food, such as "Food in Jars: Preserving in small batches year-round" by Marisa McClellan and "Saving the Season: A cook's guide to home canning and preserving" by Kevin West. You may also enjoy "The Chefs Collaborative Cookbook: Local, sustainable, delicious recipes from America's great chefs" by Ellen Jackson.
Aspiring chefs who would like to learn to cook from scratch should take a look at "Make the bread, buy the butter" by Jennifer Reese, which includes a cost-benefit analysis of homemade foods. The book includes 120 recipes, from mayonnaise to guacamole, and explains the reasons why you should make or purchase your foods, either for budgetary or culinary reasons.
Another good option is "The Homemade Pantry" by Alana Chernila, which has recipes for 101 foods you can make yourself, instead of buying from the store, including one for toaster pastries with any filling you can imagine.
