PEPPERELL -- The town will use budget surpluses in some departments to cover deficits in others, Town Administrator John Moak said on Monday night.

"In the last two months or first 15 days of a fiscal year, we can use interdepartmental moves to transfer money to underfunded departments," Moak said.

An audit costing $4,200 will be paid for using funds from the IT and treasurer collector's salaries.

Higher-than-expected street-lighting costs, which went $3,900 over budget, will be paid for by surpluses in the Town Hall-heating and town-insurance budgets.

"The costs of the streetlights have been up and down," Moak said.

He said he is looking into why so the town can prevent budget shortfalls in the future.

Moak said the transfer of funds from one department to another at the end of a fiscal year is preferable to covering the deficits with funds from the Finance Committee's reserve account, which contains $19,000.

He asked that selectmen acknowledge the transfers, but said a vote wasn't necessary.
