PEPPERELL -- The 9th annual Pepperell Business Association Duck Race will be held this Sunday at 2 p.m., from the Hollis Street bridge over the Nissitissit River to Shattuck Oil on Groton Street.
All proceeds from the race are put toward scholarships for seniors from North Middlesex Regional High School and Nashoba Valley Technical High School. Scholarship recipients are chosen by the schools, and are based on a combination of factors, including need and merit.
"Last year we gave away over $5,000 in scholarships," said Derek Ten Broeck, president of the Pepperell Business Association.
"I'm proud that we've had so much involvement from the members of the Business Association in selling tickets for the race," he said, "and that the Business Association has grown so much over the years."
Ten Broeck said the PBA is looking to exceed last year's record of raising $5,000 in scholarship money. He said as of Tuesday, they had sold nearly 500 tickets.
Tickets cost $5 for one or $20 for five, and each ticket corresponds to one rubber duck.
The person whose ticket corresponds to the winning duck will receive a grand prize of $1,000. Second-place will receive $200, third-place will receive $100 and fourth-place will be given a large pizza from C & S Pizza.
Carole Babineau has volunteered to sell tickets since the first duck race. She said she continues to volunteer because of the high level of need for scholarship money among the students.
"I just love working for the kids, to give scholarships.
Babineau said that each year it gets easier to sell tickets, as more people are already familiar with the race.
"Community involvement in the race is growing each year," she said. "When people see the ducks now, they know what it's for."
She encourages people to participate in the race, both because it's for a good cause and because it's a lot of fun.
"It's always a fun time," she said. "If it's warm the kids get in the water. People always have a good time."
Tickets will be available from several local businesses until race day, including Ten Broeck Insurance Group, Pepperell Family Pharmacy, North Middlesex Savings Bank, C.W. Lorden Real Estate and Pepperell Music Center. Tickets will also be sold at Shattuck Oil on the day of the race.
