During these past few years, it has been my privilege to serve the people of Ayer as Town Clerk and Tax Collector. With their support it has provided me the opportunity to improve these offices to Ayer's benefit. Our accomplishments began with a strong core of a well-managed office that my predecessors left me and continues to move ahead with the ideas and talent of my assistant town clerk and tax collector. I thank all of them for their legacy of goodwill and hard work.
Because each office's functions are different by law and custom, each has improved in different ways; however, the common denominator of improvement is either savings in time or money. Some of our accomplishments to date are: Online bill paying for real estate and motor vehicle excise taxes, in-office scanned entry of tax payments, voter registration at Ayer Shirley Regional School District High School, improved nomination paper processing for postage savings and standardization of election data and town meeting reports for the Ayer Annual Town Report.
As we move toward the future, the duties and responsibilities of these offices will continue to evolve through local, state and federal law and regulation. Technology, union contracts and budget constraints will also impact the offices in ways not yet known. As the offices' needs and demands grow, we must not only learn what is new, but what is better practice in the most cost efficient and productive ways.
My experiences as Ayer's Town Clerk and Tax Collector have afforded me the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of our town structure of government by working with our selectmen, town administrator, department heads, boards and committees to keep Ayer an appealing community in which to live and work.
I thank you for your support and look forward to your vote on Monday, April 28.
