Congratulations to all the candidates who ran for town office in the April 30 Ayer annual town election and to all the voters who voted for them. Voter turnout was the highest since 2010, when this decade began. The number of ballots chosen, 1,215, resulted in a voter participation rate of 24 percent. From 2012 to 2013 alone, voter participation increased 67 percent in the town election.

Our next election is Tuesday, June 25. It is the special U.S. Senate election. On that day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for precincts 1 and 2 at Ayer Town Hall. The last day to register to vote for this special election is Wednesday, June 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ayer town clerk office.

Candidates willing to run coupled with voter awareness and participation are the keystone to a successful democracy. Thank you to all the candidates, voters and election workers who made April 30 a success. Let's set a new record for June 25.
