The Ayer Planning Board has sponsored a revision to the Ayer zoning bylaw which appears as Article 13 in the special fall Town Meeting warrant. We ask that you please attend the special fall Town Meeting at Ayer High School on Monday, Oct. 22, beginning at 7 p.m. and provide your support for Article 13.
Recommended as part of the Ayer Comprehensive Plan in 2005, and conceived of in 2009, this complete edit and reorganization of the zoning bylaw was completed in spring 2011. The proposed bylaw has been available for public review in the town clerk's office and on the town's website since fall 2011. The Planning Board opened a public hearing in February 2012 that was continued four times into the spring to accommodate questions. Discussions of this proposed legislation have taken place on the Internet and in the press. The entire document has been reviewed by town counsel.
The final version of this legislation, including the proposed zoning map, is available for review on the town website at www.ayer.ma.us/Pages/AyerMA_Bcomm/Planning/index. Also at this location, you can find links to an archive containing previous versions of the proposed bylaw and a handy "side by side" document comparing the new bylaw with the old one. If you are so inclined, you can also review meeting minutes from 2009 and 2010, which document the process of creating this new bylaw.
The Ayer Planning Board would like to express its gratitude to three former Planning Board members who completed the lion's share of the work on this important legislation: Steve Wentzel, Glenn Garber and Jennifer Gibbons. The currently approved zoning bylaw is an organizational mess, tangled with typos and disconnected additions resulting from years of modifications. The proposed bylaw is streamlined, easy to follow and will serve as a valuable tool for the town of Ayer for years to come.
