To the residents of Townsend: Thank you to everyone who voted "yes" last week in support of the children and the future of Townsend, Pepperell and Ashby. Shortening the school day by 45 minutes and removing art, music, technology and health from the curriculum would have been an undesirable outcome for the district. Now they can get back to the business of educating our children.

However, due to the negative result of the override vote in Townsend, the town will need to come up with its share of the total, which will be $417,728. The money will have to be taken from the town budget or cash reserves. This could put the town of Townsend in a bad place, either financially, or due to a cut in services, depending on where the money comes from. I do not think this is fair to the town and I am willing to give them my share of the tax increase that I would have had to pay if the voting results in Townsend had been positive. I voted "yes" and was planning on a $100 tax increase.

I think it is well worth the $100 to keep the arts in our schools and the other services that will help our students succeed. If other residents feel the same way, and can afford to do so, they could also make a monetary contribution to the Town of Townsend.

You do not have to have school-age children in order to reap the benefits of a good school district. Everyone comes out ahead.
