BILLERICA -- A man being held without bail for charges of kidnapping and assaulting a woman in Townsend last year was hospitalized following an "incident" at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction on Saturday afternoon.

Kevin Hamel, 55, was taken to the hospital as a precaution and has since returned to the Billerica jail, according to Kevin Maccioli, a spokesman for the Middlesex Sheriff's Office.

No further information would be provided as the incident remains under investigation, Maccioli said.

Hamel, who has ties to Townsend, Ayer and Fitchburg, stands accused in an assault on a woman in Townsend in March 2018. Responding officers found Hamel had held the woman against her will and violently assaulted her, causing "numerous" injuries, according to State Police.

Hamel left the scene of the alleged assault prior to police arrival. He was placed on the state's Most Wanted Fugitive List in August.

He was arrested in Florida on Jan. 18,extradited to Massachusetts days later and remanded to State Police.

Hamel appeared in Ayer District Court for a dangerousness hearing on Friday, where it was determined he would remain held without bail at the Middlesex Jail and House of Correction.
