ASHBY -- Ashby firefighters are good at a lot more than just fighting fires.
The next phase of renovations have begun at Maja Hall on Erickson Road. Both restrooms were gutted down to the studs and will soon be restored with new fixtures, furnishings and finished walls, floor and ceiling.
Fire Chief Mike Bussell said Maja Hall will make a great community center. It will be used by the Ashby Fire Association for fundraising events and will be available for rental by various community groups.
Ashby Fire Association President Chris Borneman said the facility will be perfect for private groups planning receptions, reunions or birthday parties. It has a large meeting room, a full kitchen and restrooms. It also has lots of room outdoors for games, a barbecue pit and parking.
Sunday's demolition effort was supported by Ashby firefighters, along with representatives from Scout Troop 27 of Ashby and Modern Woodmen Fraternal Chapter 13440.
The current phase of the remodeling effort was funded by a community-service grant from Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial.
Financial representative Claude Wiggins, an Ashby resident, said, "Modern Woodmen doesn't have stock holders. Our profits are returned to our members through fraternal benefits and investment in the communities where they live."
Additional funding for the Maja Hall renovation is needed. The Ashby Fire Association is currently sponsoring a winter raffle.
