GROTON -- The town's deputy police chief and two outside candidates are the finalists to lead the department.

Deputy Chief James Cullen, who is currently serving as the interim chief, Hudson New Hampshire Chief Jason Lavoie, and Lunenburg Lt. Michael Luth were chosen from a pool of 40 candidates from around New England.

A search committee narrowed the group to five and advanced them to a second round of interviews with a panel of area police chiefs and town department heads.

The finalists will interview with the Select Board Wednesday and go through assessment center testing Thursday.

The board is expected to make a decision next Monday.

Former chief Donald Palma led the department for more than a decade. He retired on Memorial Day.

He announced his plans in February with a year left in his contract.
