HARVARD -- On Dec. 14-16, the Bromfield Drama Society will present "3 Ghosts," an exciting, new, steampunk-style musical based on Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol," with music by Collin Simon and lyrics by Liz Muller.
"3 Ghosts" celebrates what Dickens himself wrote as a preface to his story: "I have endeavored in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it."
Taking his cue, the music, lyrics, and story do not shy away from the ghostly aspect and it does not attempt to change the original story at all. "3 Ghosts" is a rich blend of the traditional Dickens tale, and fantasy-based steampunk styling. It is filled with emotional peaks, from loneliness to happiness, anger to laughter, to despair, to romance, to fear, to sadness and hope. Even though it's a musical thick with original Dickens quotes, it feels like hearing the story for the first time all over again.
Steampunk styling typically features a setting inspired by the 19th century industrial revolution and the British Victorian era. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features retro-futuristic inventions, such as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. This alternate historical genre is perfect for the nightmarish spectral visitors in Dickens' story.
Yet to be published, "3 Ghosts" was written and produced by PipeDream Theatre, a New York City off-Broadway theater, and made its NYC premiere at Theatre Row in December of last year.
The Bromfield School cast is composed of sixth- through 12th-grade students and features Daniel Jackson as Scrooge, Ben Senkalski as Jacob Marley, and Will Ashley as Bob Cratchit.
Production dates for "3 Ghosts" are Dec. 14 and 15 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2 p.m., in the Cronin Auditorium at the Bromfield School. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors and are available at the door beginning one hour before curtain.
