GROTON -- A "dysfunctional" relationship with some members of the Board of Selectmen may have contributed to Police Chief Donald Palma's early retirement, said Selectman Barry Pease.
Regardless of who was involved, the board should be held responsible for his departure, Pease said at the board's meeting Monday night.
Palma has served as chief since 2007. He will retire at the end of May, about a year before his contract is expected to end.
About 20 people attended the meeting that included a packed agenda and lasted three hours.
Town Manager Mark Haddad updated the board about the process to find a new police chief.
A nine-member search committee to evaluate candidates will include members from town government, the Police Department and citizens.
Haddad suggested considering internal candidates first before doing an external search. The board decided to table that decision.
