GROTON -- Residents of the Lost Lake neighborhoods plan to celebrate the reopening and refurbishing of Sargisson Beach as well as the Fourth of July with a boat flotilla on Independence Day.
All are invited to come down and take a look at what has been done to the beach as well as watch local boat owners parade around the lakes in stately fashion.
Lost Lake and Knops Pond will be virtually free of the invasive weeds that for so long had limited the use of power-boats and made swimming dangerous.
"The lakes are in very, very good shape," reported Art Prest, president of the Groton Lakes Association. "The water is very clear."
Open for the last few years but not officially supervised, Sargisson Beach had been prey to the elements as rain washed down from the nearby roadway turned trails and stairways into streams leaving dry washes filled with stones.
The flotilla is scheduled to begin at noon on July 4th with vessels assembling at Sargisson Beach and then proceeding to make a slow circuit around the lakes festooned in red, white, and blue. The public is welcome to come out and cheer on the boat owners in what many hope will become an annual tradition. -- Pierre Comtois
