SHIRLEY -- It's been a long time since there were cows on Shirley Common, but the two brought to the Common did their part to raise money for the Shirley Playboard at Saturday's Shirley Hoe Down.
The weather was wonderful, the attendance was great and many local charities were able to raise funds for their organizations. Thanks go to all the customers who supported Ayer Shirley Bronco Football, Ayer Shirley Middle School History Club, Ayer Shirley Robotics, Ayer Shirley Youth Venture Teams, Friends of Hazen Library, Shirley Arts!, Shirley Boy Scouts Troop #7, Shirley Center Town Hall, Shirley Conservation Commission, Shirley Cub Scouts Pack #31, Shirley Penguins, Shirley Playboard, Shirley Historical Society, Shirley Recycling Committee, Shirley Seniors, Shirley Venture Crew #34, and Trinity Chapel.
Entertainers for the day included the Ayer Shirley Middle School Chorus, 360 Gymnastics, John Hansen and some of his music students, Emilie Faucher and her Summer Time Trio, Blinkee the Clown, and Back to the Garden.
Thanks go to the local businesses that helped to support the activities -- Dunkin' Donuts, Dr. Arthur Eddy, Fidelity Bank, 360 Gymnastics, Lambert's Hardware, Attorney Ernest H. Hyde, North Middlesex Bank, Phoenix Park, Piccolino Club, Shirley Animal Clinic, Shirley Fuel, Shirley Seniors and Village Pizza.
Extra thanks go to all those who came early in the morning to help set up and to those who came early in the evening to help clean up. Last, but not least, thanks to Gerry Wheeler for once again providing the sound system and daylong running commentary.
