Friends of Townsend Seniors accepting nominations for Wm. E. May Endowment Fund award
The Friends of the Townsend Seniors are looking for that outstanding individual in the Townsend community who has given of himself or herself to the growth and betterment of the town of Townsend.
Friends President Russ Moore explains that candidates will be well-respected and will have demonstrated through actions and deeds a keen interest in the affairs and needs of the senior citizens of Townsend.
Nominations are now open for this year's honoree for the 2014 William E. May Endowment Award.
Past awardees include: William E. May, Dr. Lawrence Churchville Jr., Roy and Nancy Shepherd, Jim Clish, Ethel Amiro, Bob Tumber, Ed and Mary West, Hirk and Louise Fortin, Connie Giles, Terry McNabb, David Profit, Avis Roy, Russ Moore and Ken and Susan Gerken.
Nomination forms are available at the Senior Center (978-597-1710), McNabb's Pharmacy and the Town Clerk's Office.
If someone was nominated in the past and not selected, please consider resubmitting that individual for consideration. Nomination forms should be placed in a sealed envelope, marked "William E. May Nomination" and mailed to Friends of Townsend Seniors, P.O. Box 972, Townsend, MA 01469 or dropped off at the Senior Center. They must be received by June 6.
Civil War encampment May 31, June 1
On Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, visit the Preservation Collaborative, Inc.
Throughout the day, the Townsend Historical Society will be giving tours of its circa 1809 Federal-style homestead, best known for its Rufus Porter murals.
Volunteer re-enactors will set up camp, perform military drills and musket firings, and demonstrate military tactics of the 18th century.
Civilian re-enactors will be demonstrating period crafts and activities, including lace-making, candle-dipping, writing, toys and games. You will also be offered a rare glimpse into 18th century cooking as they demonstrate preparation of a noontime meal on the Reed House's kitchen hearth!
This day-long celebration is for you and your family. Come down and get a hands-on experience of late 18th century life. General admission is $5 or free with a Townsend Historical Society membership. All children under the age of 18 come free!

Professional actor to portray Isaiah Thomas, patriot printer, May 31
The Townsend Historical Society is proud to present re-enactor Neil Gustafson as Isaiah Thomas, patriot printer, on Saturday, May 31, 2 p.m. at the Harbor Church, 80 Main St. in Townsend.
The program is part of the events of the Patriot's Encampment that weekend at the Reed Homestead, open to the public and free of charge.
Bike recycle day May 31
Bicycle Recycle Day will be held by Saint John the Evangelist Parish on Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to noon. Drop off your bicycle in the parking lot at 1 School Street, Townsend. Any bicycle is a good bicycle, reclaim -- reuse. There is no cost to drop off your old or new bicycle. If you are not able to drop it off, call and we will come and pick it up.
