On March 22, nine local boys and girls representing the Sister Lydia Longley Madeleine, Council No. 13140 in Groton traveled to Nichols College in Dudley to compete in the Central Region Free Throw Competition.

The local contingent competed well and walked away with two trophies, with Hannah Wynn taking first-place and Kayla Talbot finishing in second in their respective age groups.

The Central Region Competition is one of five held in the state, with winners proceeding to the Massachusetts State Finals.

The Free Throw Competition is a yearly event sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Each contestant is allowed 25 free-throw attempts in the contest, with extra rounds of five free throws held in the event of a tie.

On the girl's side, Hannah sank 12 of 25 shots to win the 12-year-old girl's bracket, qualifying for the state finals. In the 10-year-old girl's bracket, Kayla Talbot made 10 of 25 shots to finish in a tie for first-place, then battled through two tiebreaker rounds before finishing in second-place.

Other competitors on the girl's side were Jordan Wynn (fourth in the 13-year-old age group) and Gillian Lindquist (fifth-place in the 14-year-old age group).

Jordan was the top local girls' shooter on the day, making 17 of 25 free throws.

The boys' side saw two fourth-place finishers: Andrew Grant, 9, and Christopher Smith, 10; two third-place finishers: Jeremy Keast, 12, and Patrick O'Reilly, 14; and a sixth-place finisher: Sam Smethurst, 11.


Jeremy Keast was the top local boys' shooter, making 20 of 25 free throws.
