Local Boy Scout troops came together on Friday and Saturday, March 28-29, for a weekend of competition, camaraderie and fun.
Troop 3 Groton, Troop 1 West Groton, Troop 28 Dunstable and Troop 26 Pepperell together sent more than 60 boys to Grotonwood, where they camped out Friday night and engaged in several Scoutcraft competitions on Saturday.
As with all activities in Boy Scouting, the Camporee was envisioned, organized and driven by the boys. Each troop is run by an elected senior patrol leader, and the four SPLs worked together to define the agenda, secure the location and then organize their troops to run their assigned activity and train to compete in the others.
Each of the troops organized an activity in which Scouts, organized by patrols, competed for scores. Rotating between fire-building, orienteering, lashing and a first-aid carry relay, the boys tested their skills against each other under the supervision of senior Scouts at each activity.
Each activity was won by a different troop, and the winners were recognized in a ceremony on Saturday afternoon. As the boys were leaving, there was much discussion about repeating the Camporee next year, hopefully, when the weather will be more cooperative.
