DEVENS -- "Number one, just begun."

It's time to brush up on your bingo lingo! The Playboard of Shirley is hosting its second annual Bingo for Grown-ups at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Devens Common.

Last year's bingo extravaganza, held at American Legion Post 183 in Shirley, sold out and raised more than $3,000 toward the Playboard's efforts to construct a metal shade structure for the Lura A. White Community Playground. The playground was completely overhauled in 2011 thanks to many community businesses, charitable organizations, families and friends of play.

This year, each $25 ticket entitles a player to 10 cards. Tickets are available at the door or by contacting Playboard co-chair Sue Heinz at or 508-237-4503.

"Be sure to provide your name, phone number, and how many people will be at your table," said Playboard member Jess Bailey in a recent interview.

"Doors open at 5:30, and all attendees get a $5 credit toward dinner at the Great American Grill at the hotel the same night," she said. The restaurant can be reached at 978-615-1509.

"You can reserve your seat and enjoy dinner before the game at 7," said Bailey. "There will be cash and door prizes, and one is an overnight stay at the Hilton Garden Inn with dinner." Players must be at least 18 years old.

Bailey said that this year's proceeds from the event would go toward Playboard initiatives including the installation of the shade structure, playground maintenance, and the installation of an accessible swing for children with disabilities.

"We are three-quarters of the way toward our goal for the shade structure and required maintenance for this year," Bailey stated.

"We have a lot of plans for this year. We are hosting Cow Chip Bingo again at the Shirley Hoe Down, an under-the-stars movie night this summer, a Bruins Stew, and if there is enough interest and permits allow, perhaps a luau this summer, and our eighth annual Day of Play (this fall)."

There will also be a Dale Prentiss Field and LAW Community Playground cleanup day from 8 a.m. to noon on April 5. All are invited to lend a hand and meet other community volunteers.

An arm of the Shirley Charitable Foundation, the Playboard of Shirley is made up of community volunteers, and thanks to their hard work, the town has been designated a KaBOOM!-authorized "Playful City USA" for seven consecutive years.

A national nonprofit dedicated to creating better places to play, KaBOOM! has helped make the 2011 LAW Community Playground installation and Shirley's Annual Days of Play possible, through a series of grants.
