TOWNSEND -- The Townsend VFW Post 6538 Ladies Auxiliary is pleased to announce the winners in two of its Americanism contests for young people.
Fifty grade 5 students entered the Auxiliary's "America, the Beautiful" essay contest. Zachary Lutz will receive $25 for his essay placing first in the competition. The $15 second-place award will be presented to Madison Rowley. Both are students at Hawthorne Brook Middle School in Townsend. The $10 third-place award will be given to Theresa Bettis, a student at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River.
Eighteen entries were received in the Townsend Auxiliary's Poster Contest for students in grades 3 and 4 with the same theme. The poster submitted by Melkamu Creaghan, a grade 4 student at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School, was selected as the first-place winner and he will receive $15. The $10 second-place award will be presented to Daniel Mooney, a grade 3 Immaculate Heart of Mary School student. Daniel Goad, a grade 4 student, and Julia Hyde, a grade 3 student, will each receive a $5 third-place award. Both attend Spaulding Memorial School in Townsend.
Zachary's essay and Malakamu's poster have been entered into competition at the Department of Massachusetts Ladies Auxiliary VFW level of these contests.
The Townsend VFW Post 6538 Ladies Auxiliary will honor these six local winners at a special Open House and Awards Ceremony to be held in the Townsend VFW Function Hall toward the end of the school year.
