WESTFORD -- Two students from the Class of 2013 at Nashoba Valley Technical High School were among the students recognized at the recent Merrimack Valley Superintendents' Association Academic Scholars Luncheon at Lenzi's in Dracut.
Rachel Casey of Pepperell, daughter of Richard and Doris Casey, is the valedictorian of the Class of 2013 in the early childhood education program. She is an honors student, a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, a gold-medalist at the SkillsUSA District Competition and a bronze-medalist in the 2012 State Competition.
Rachel has qualified for the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and has taken Advanced Placement courses in math and English. Working at the school-affiliated Nashoba Valley Early Learning Center, she has received Massachusetts certification in preschool and infant/toddler care.
Rachel is in the Chorus and Drama Club, has played roles in each of the last four musical productions, and helped with set design for January's performances of "Once Upon a Mattress."
She plans to attend Framingham State College in the fall.
Cynthia Messina of Townsend, daughter of James Messina and Barbara Haywood, is the salutatorian of the Class of 2013. A student in the design & visual communications program, she is Nashoba Tech's Walter J. Markham Award nominee. She is a high-honors student and has been inducted into the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society.
Cynthia is involved in many school activities, including Drama Club, Horticulture Club and volleyball. She volunteers at many school events, such as open house, parent night and the 2012 5K Road Race. Outside school, she volunteers at a local food bank and Townsend Ecumenical Outreach.
She has received the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship and, as a Girl Scout, has earned the silver and bronze medals.
Cynthia has been accepted into Fitchburg State University and Salem State University. She plans to pursue a degree in graphic design and a career in that field.
