WESTFORD -- Rachel Casey, a senior from Townsend, is Nashoba Valley Technical High School's nominee for the Massachusetts Association of Vocational Administrators' Outstanding Vocational Technical Student of 2013.

Rachel, the daughter of Richard and Doris Casey of Townsend, is in the Early Childhood Education program at Nashoba Tech. She is an honors student, a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, and a gold-medalist at the SkillsUSA 2012 District Competition and a bronze-medalist in the State Competition.

Rachel has qualified for the Adams Scholarship, and is taking advanced-placement classes in math and English. She has totaled more than 150 hours each in preschool and infant/toddler care, and has received Massachusetts certification in both areas, working at the school-affiliated Nashoba Valley Early Learning Center.

Rachel is a member of the chorus and drama club, and has played roles in each of the last four musical productions, including January's performances of "Once Upon a Mattress," for which she also helped with set design. She has been a Girl Scout since childhood. She plans to attend college to become a developmental specialist and has been accepted to Framingham State University.

Each technical school in the state nominates a student for the MAVA Outstanding Vocational Technical Student Award.

All nominees were honored at a dinner in April at Mechanics Hall in Worcester.
