TOWNSEND -- A total of 32 entries were received in the Voice of Democracy Competition co-sponsored locally by Townsend VFW Post 6538 and its Ladies Auxiliary and Pepperell VFW Post 3291 and its Ladies Auxiliary.
Four North Middlesex Regional High School students, two Nashoba Valley Technical High School students and 26 students at the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River entered the local competition.
Ciara Kay placed first in the competition and will receive $150 for that accomplishment. The second place award of $100 was earned by Padraig Gossellin. Both are seniors at North Middlesex Regional High School and live in Townsend. The $50 third place award will be presented to Maria Benitz, of Harvard, a sophomore at Immaculate Heart of Mary School.
Rules of this National VFW and Ladies Auxiliary competition allow for one entry for each 15 or fraction thereof received at the local level to be entered into the District level of competition. As a result, Ciara Kay will receive the $150 first place District 15 Voice of Democracy award and Maria Benitz will receive the $100 second place District 15 Voice of Democracy award.
The local Voice of Democracy awards will be presented to the winners at an awards program to be held at their school at the end of the school year.
